Undecided? Grab a pen

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

Everyone is asking you. “What are you going to major in?” “What are you thinking about for a career?” “What are you going to do for the rest of your life?”

What a daunting request for someone who probably just learned to drive a couple of months or years ago.

I don’t expect you to have a major picked today, tomorrow, or by the time you hit submit on the Common Application. But, maybe I can help you narrow it down a bit.

Go get a pen and maybe four or five of those college brochures. You know the ones in that box your feet are probably resting on right now?

Open the first one up to the page that lists all the programs and majors. See it? Now take that pen and cross off what you know you don’t want to do for the rest of your life. Now do that with the second brochure...and the third...and so on.

Have some things leftover that aren’t crossed off? See any common themes? See some things you’re not 100% sure about yet?

If so, that’s good! Now you have a little bit of a focus. Take it a little bit further. Maybe ask a family friend you know who works in that area a little bit more about what they took in college. Or do a quick google search about the program.

If you haven’t narrowed it down at all, and that didn’t help, that’s ok too! Most colleges have liberal arts or general education classes that will expose you to many different areas. It won’t add to your time in college, in most cases you have to take them anyway.
